85% of companies use open source software, says Gartner
According to analysts at Gartner®, 85% of companies are already using open-source software, with most of the remaining 15 percent expecting to do so within the next year. Gartner conducted its survey of 274 end-user organizations across Asia, Europe and North American in May and June 2008.
Respondents to the survey pointed to cost as a prime motivator for their adoption of open source. Some also suggested open source software provides some protection against single-vendor lock-in and offers fast time to market.
