MSF elearning : the film

MSF elearning : the filmLike many medical organisations today, MSF (Operational Center Brussels) is building e-learning courses. The first course focusses on handling a nutritional center and addresses the medical MSF staff preparing for their first nutritional mission.

The course is situation-based. It transports the learner in an ambulatory nutritional center that he/she has to manage. This includes diagnose, treat and follow children, but also the whole reporting and monitoring aspects of such a mission : statistics follow-up, logistics and day-to-day management of the center .

The course splits into 4 main sections:

  • the prerequisites of nutrients deficiency
  • the clinical cases diagnosis and treatment
  • the nutritional center day-to-day management
  • and finally the monitoring ON the evolution and progress of your activity.

The analysis of the course objectives with Annick Filot, Pascale Delchevalerie and An Verwulge, the 3 authors of the project, led to a simple case-based learning offering a sequence of the form:

  1. context of the case
  2. diagnostic or strategy question
  3. additional paper material (guidelines etc.)
  4. possible answers to select
  5. feedback.

The focus here is on the feedback where all the theory, protocols and best practices are described in various forms:

  • field videos
  • multimedia tutoring with a lot of effort on visual description
  • mindmaps to structure the information

There is not so much of an interaction between the learners as the course as they will not necessarily follow it at the same period of the year. But the candidates get a real opportunity to learn from their mistakes, thanks to the richness and relevance of the feedback.
